MEET PAUL PETERSON

figure 1 Dr. Paul E. Peterson is The Clearing Corporation Foundation Clinical Professor of Derivatives Trading in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics (ACE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  His primary focus is on futures and options markets, market regulation and clearing, particularly in relation to commodity prices and risk management.  Other interests include marketing practices and pricing issues in the livestock, meat and dairy industries.

Prior to joining the ACE faculty, he was the Director of Research and Commodity Product Development for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange from 1989 to 2012, where was responsible for the development of new trading and risk management instruments, as well as the maintenance of existing contracts.  His industry career also included staff positions at the Chicago Board of Trade and the American Farm Bureau Federation.

He has spoken frequently to industry groups, written extensively for government audiences including Congress, CFTC and USDA, and co-authored The CME Group Risk Management Handbook:  Products and Applications.  An Illinois native, he received a Ph.D. in agricultural economics, an M.S. in animal science and a B.S. in agriculture, all from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
